Antlers in the making

The antlers were the first part of the Supermoose that came to form. Having them act as a comedy glider was a natural choice so they stayed constant during the whole design process. They also will look sooooooooo cool Just as long as Antony doesn’t turn his head too quickly, he could sweep several Bognor personnel into the Channel… wouldn’t do our chances any favours!!

Here you can see Dom, our engineer extraordinaire, bring the drawing to life. I think he has found his calling but I don’t know what the demand is nowadays for handcrafted antlers? Bah, people on Ebay will buy anything!

This isn’t a picture of the final ‘Supermoose’ but it demonstrates what we
were looking for in the build of the antlers.

Day 1

The first humble sheet of plywood…

Can you tell what it is yet?

Dom performs brain surgery in his own time…

The builders diet. It’s going to be more popular than Atkins.

It’s looking antler shaped

More antler shapiness

Bet you are wondering what those teardrop shapes are for… read on

Makes more sense now doesn’t it!!

How cool does that look!

Notice the aerofoil shape?
That will hopefully aid some sort of flight rather than a rather sharp fall…

The third length of wood is inserted and the skeleton has real strength

Day Two

Dom’s had to bring in extra help

This is a hot wire cutter that will be used to slice through the polystyrene. It works by sending a small current through the wire that heats up to slice the polystyrene like a hot knife through butter.

The aerofoil shapes are inserted into the ends of the antlers

This is a full view of the skeleton. At this point progress is slow as it is very fiddly.
Also time is needed for glue to dry.

Wonder what Dom will do with that?

Day Four

It is the half way point and Dom is preparing the skeleton for the handles that will be attached later.

Ah, there’s the polystyrene!

Hotwire in action

More blocks are in place ready to be shaped

Day Four

The hotwire cutter has done a treat and the blocks have been shaped to form an aerofoil.

The flesh is appearing on the bones

Day Five

Look at that zen like concentration

Fine sanding of the shape

Notice the detail of the wavy edge that will look great on the day

Drilling for the handles. That’s one mean looking drill…

Tada! So light and aerodynamic Dom had to build a house to stop from blowing away to Norway.

So that is where the project is so far. The next stage is to cover the antlers in a layer of plaster and then fibreglass matting. Once that has set hard they will be ready for painting. That won’t happen for another few weeks as Dom, when driving to the shops got lost and ended up in France.
He will return soon, promise.
